If you’re staying in the area, there are plenty of attractions in the nearby towns and villages!

1) Stop off at Bishop’s Stortford for a meal, a few drinks, and some evening entertainment at Rhodes, named after Sir Cecil (some of the building was his birthplace). Today, the centre houses exhibitions and hosts musical events, as well as offering a theatre and cinema.

2) Head out to Harlow, which has a variety of monuments, including the site of a Roman temple. The town also has parks, pubs, art galleries and a range of other features to make a visit here worthwhile.

3) See Mountfitchet Castle, which is a reconstruction of the motte and bailey castle that was originally on the site. A Norman village is faithfully reproduced here, too. Definitely a must-see!

4) Also at the castle is the House on the Hill Toy Museum, which will delight children of all ages. It all grew out of an enthusiastic collector’s passion – and the collection is so vast and varied that you can easily spend a couple of hours browsing it!

7) See the largest museum of aviation in the country at Imperial War Museum Duxford. It’s full of interesting old planes as well as land vehicles used in the First World War – and you might even catch an air show!

8) More fun for the children can be found in the ancient royal hunting forest at Hatfield – but adults can enjoy tranquillity in Hatfield Forest, too, while the kids run through the marked trails. It’s also home to some rare plant and animal species.

9) Visit Cambridge! Enjoy a spot of punting on the Cam, tour the university, browse the museums and enjoy dinner at one of the great restaurants in the city.
